2023 will also be an opportunity for research that will see scholars and prestigious institutions confront each other, united in the desire to fully understand a figure who profoundly marked the 20th century and who still represents an essential reference today. In the foreground of Picasso’s projects of the year will be his dimension as an essentially European artist, who has combined his profound knowledge of tradition with a revolutionary spirit ready to take up the most advanced challenges of the modern. But the Andalusian genius was also capable of going beyond the confines of his own culture, speaking to spectators distant in time and space, and creating universal symbols such as Guernicaemblem of the refusal of war and the defense of human rights.

The beating heart of the 2023 initiatives will be the Musée National Picasso in Paris, promoter of the celebrations together with Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, nephew of the artist, president of the Fundación Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte, and José Guirao, former Minister of Culture Spanish. The French museum will also be home to the new Picasso Study Center in the restored spaces of the historic Hôtel de Rohan. Among the first exhibitions to inaugurate in the upcoming year there will be Picasso and prehistoryat the Musée del l’Homme in Paris from February 8, e picasso. The artist and the model: latest worksfrom February 19 at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, while at the Museé de Montmartre it is already underway Fernande Olivier and Pablo Picasso, in the intimacy of the Bateau-Lavoirdedicated to the link between the artist and his famous muse in the avant-garde years, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium explores the fundamental theme Picasso and abstraction.

At the Kunstmuseum in Basel and the Prado Museum in Madrid we will return to the origins of the artist’s inspiration with the monumental confrontation Picasso-El Grecowhile at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona an exhibition dedicated to Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, the merchant who made the master’s fortune in Paris. Returning to spring, in March the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando will present 30 masterpieces selected within the exclusive Nahmad Collectionwhile in Malaga, the birthplace of the master, a major exhibition will explore the central role of the human body in all of his work (Picasso – Matter and body, from 8 May to 10 September at the Picasso Museum and from 29 September at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao). On the other side of the ocean, the Guggenheim Museum in New York will focus on the revolutionary Parisian years with an exhibition built around the masterpiece by Moulin de la Galettea cornerstone of the US museum’s collection (from May 12).

Autumn will also be full of surprises. From 13 September the Luxembourg Museum will tell the story of the relationship between the artist and his great patron, Gertrude Steinin the heroic years of Cubism, and at the Center Pompidou in Paris picasso. Draw endlessly will highlight the over 2,000 graphic works that represent the most substantial production of an extraordinarily prolific master. In Barcelona, meanwhile, preparations are underway for one of the most awaited projects of the year: the result of the collaboration between the Picasso Museum of the Catalan city and the Fundaciò Joan Mirò, the exhibition Miro-Picasso will pay homage to the friendship that kept the two giants of modern art united throughout their lives.
